The intergenerational project between 4th-6th grade elementary school students and the elderly at the La Paz nursing home is an enriching initiative that fosters the exchange of experiences and knowledge between generations. Through various activities, this program allows children and the elderly to share meaningful moments, strengthening community ties and promoting respect and empathy.
This project includes weekly meetings where students and nursing home residents participate in activities such as storytelling, craft workshops, board games and conversations about history and daily life. In addition, special events are organized on important dates, such as Tamborrada, Carnivals and other local festivities, where children can learn about the traditions and culture of the community through active participation alongside the elderly.
The Tamborrada is one of the most exciting celebrations within the project, where students and nursing home residents form their own comparsas and play drums and barrels, recreating the tradition of this holiday. This activity allows the elderly to relive memories of their youth and the children to discover and appropriate local customs.
During Carnival, workshops are organized for costume making, make-up and decoration of the asylum, encouraging creativity and cooperation between generations. The day culminates with a parade and a party in which everyone participates, promoting an atmosphere of joy and connection.
One of the most valuable aspects of this initiative is the emotional impact it has on both parties. Children develop a greater sensitivity towards the elderly, understanding the importance of respect and patience. For their part, the elderly experience an improvement in their emotional well-being as they feel listened to, valued and accompanied. Constant interaction also helps to reduce the feeling of loneliness and improve the mood of the elderly.
In addition, this project also contributes to the development of social skills in students, fostering communication, empathy and teamwork. At the community level, it strengthens intergenerational ties and promotes a more inclusive and supportive society.
In short, this program not only enriches the lives of the participants, but also creates a mutual learning environment where generations complement each other, demonstrating that coexistence between young and old is an inexhaustible source of learning and affection. With the incorporation of cultural and festive events such as the Tamborrada and Carnivals, the project becomes even more vibrant and meaningful, reinforcing community identity and a sense of belonging.
