Reading helps children develop their imagination and learn about the world around them; it also improves their vocabulary, linguistic richness, memory and concentration, which contributes to greater mental agility and an increase in their culture, benefiting them academically.
The acquisition of literacy skills by students is a constructive, psycholinguistic and transversal process in which the teacher plays a fundamental role. For this reason, stimulating the reading habit in children is one of the main curricular objectives of the first stages of primary education.
In order to encourage children’s love of reading, the teacher must assume the role of facilitator. Each student plays an active role in his or her learning, from which the teacher seeks to promote the construction of his or her own meanings. In this sense, teachers should know and stimulate each student according to his or her needs and interests.
Reading games for children, as well as short guided readings, are some of the most effective and indispensable tools for the promotion of learning and assimilation of reading and writing skills. In order to promote reading and its enjoyment in our classrooms, we have created the reading corner. By creating this space in the classroom, we generate a positive relationship with books that will be decisive for the promotion of reading in children. In addition, it allows them to learn how libraries work through play.
